Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Annuitant Work Program?

The annuitant work program is used by many state departments to fill their part-time work needs. These departments seek out retired state employees because of their various skills and expertise. The state retiree is hired on an hourly basis, and can work for a state agency up to a maximum of 960 hours in a calendar year without affecting his or her retirement allowance.

2. How do I get on the annuitant-work list?

First, you must be a member of CSEA Retirees, Inc.. Biannually (November and May) the California State Retiree newspaper publishes an application to be filled out by retirees who desire to enter the program.

If your application is received in November or December, your name is put on the annuitant work list for one full year. If your application is received in May or June it will be good June through December only. Regardless, you must re-apply every November to remain on the list.

The annuitant work list is circulated to over 500 addresses throughout nearly all state departments. You do not have to be a member of CSEA to work for the state, but you do have to be a member to take advantage of this program list.

Note: Retirees who are not  CSEA members are responsible to pay any "Fair Share" fees contracted with departments which hire them.

5. What must I do to report the death of an annuitant?

When a PERS annuitant dies, there are several important steps a spouse or family member can take to help assure prompt payment of any PERS benefits due:

First, notify PERS by telephone or letter of the annuitant's death.

  • Post Retirement Services Division, P.O. Box 942716, Sacramento, CA 94229-2716
  • Call (916) 326-3848
  • Toll-free 1-800-352-2238,
  • TDD (916) 326-3240)

Be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Name
  • Social Security Number
  • PERS Retirement Account Number
  • Date of annuitant's death
  • Name and Address of person providing the Notice of Death
  • Name and Address of the surviving spouse, other next of kin, or the person who will be settling the estate.

Be sure to set aside the following documents which will be needed to establish who is entitled to death benefits:

  • A copy of the Death Certificate
  • Letters of administration from the executor of the estate, if the annuitant's estate is to be paid any death benefits
  • Other documents such as marriage certificates, the birth certificate of the beneficiary, or any other dissolution of marriage final judgment papers.

Next, complete the Survivor Information Questionnaire/Claimant Statement and Withholding Tax Election Forms which PERS will send upon receiving notice of the annuitant's death.

If a beneficiary or survivor is entitled to continued coverage under a health or dental insurance plan administered or approved by PERS, enrollment will automatically be continued after the annuitant's death.

PERS will advise the individual filing the death report whether a monthly allowance will be payable, and whether it will be necessary to return any warrants already received.
