Did You Know? 75% of people 65 and over will eventually need Long Term Care!

Did You Know that women are more likely to need long term care services than men? Did you know that women are the primary care givers in long term care situations?

CSEA members look out for their “brothers and sisters”; it is at the heart of everything we do. But are we as a society looking out for our sisters, daughters and mothers? On average, women outlive men by 5 years.  Nearly half of all women 75 or older are living alone, compared to less than one quarter of men.  Many of those women need some form of care.

Not only are woman more likely to need long term care services, they are also more likely to be the ones to provide caregiving services to those they love. Did you know that approximately 75% of the individuals who provide home care services are women?  Care giving not only takes a physical and an emotional toll; it also can result in a substantial economic toll – especially when the caregiver is a woman. When women become caregivers, they are 2.5 times more likely to end up in poverty and five times more likely to depend on Social Security.

Unfortunately, many individuals underestimate the need for long term care planning.  Most individuals believe that long term care insurance is too expensive, or that they don’t need to purchase it until they are much older.  What most individuals do not know is that approximately 28% of the people who purchased long term care in the first half of 2010 were under the age of 61 and they paid less than $1,000. Most long term care policies have premiums that remain level, with rates only increasing if they are increased for the entire group.  As a result, the younger an individual is when they purchase a plan the more affordable it can be over the long haul.
