Max Turchen began his state career in 1954 at the Employment Development Department, where he worked his way up from trainee to employment security officer I. After four years, he transferred to the Department of Industrial Relations, where he worked as an industrial welfare agent for 20 years and promoted to senior industrial welfare agent and area administrator.
For the next eight years until retirement in 1983, Turchen worked with the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement. In 1975, that division was part of the merger of Industrial Welfare and Labor Law Enforcement.
His extensive involvement in CSEA includes a term as Regional Director for Region XI; many years as member and five years as chair of the Employees Political Information Committee (EPIC, which was CSEA’s former political action committee); chair of the CSEA Governmental Affairs Committee; president of Chapter 4 (metropolitan Los Angeles) for eight years and member for several years prior; member of the CSEA Statewide Insurance Committee. He is also co-chair of the Legislative Contact Representative Committee. Additionally, since 1960 Turchen has also served as a delegate to CSEA General Council.
Besides his many duties within CSEA, Turchen has been involved in many other retirement groups, including the National Council of Senior Citizens and California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA) and the Congress of California Seniors, where he served as chair of the Los Angeles Region and was elected to the Board of Directors in 1990. He is also chair of the Supervisory Committee of the California Bear Credit Union and a commissioner on the California Apprenticeship Council.
As Retired Division board member for District A, Turchen represents the greater Los Angeles area, including Chapters 4, 9 and 20.
